I’m a journalist, author and essayist. I’m the author of a book called The Kings of New York (which was titled Game of Kings in paperback, and won a Quill Award as the Best Sports Book of 2007, and was named one of Amazon’s top books of the year), about a Brooklyn high-school chess team; a book about sports in the 1980’s, titled Bigger Than the Game, which interweaves the stories of Bo Jackson, Len Bias, Jim McMahon, and many others; and a cultural and personal history of college football, Season of Saturdays, which was named one of the best books of the year by Newsweek and Quartz and which Sports Illustrated called “a beautiful mix of memoir and reportage.” (I also wrote a book of short fiction, Girl Boy Etc.)
I’m a graduate of Penn State and got my M.F.A. at Boston University. I grew up a few miles from the Penn State campus in central Pennsylvania, and I’ve lived and worked in Akron, Dallas, Los Angeles, Boston, New York, Portland, and (currently) the Bay Area. I’ve been a contributing writer for ESPN, The New York Times, Grantland and Rolling Stone, among others. I currently contribute to several outlets, including The Ringer, and am working on a new book, as well as screenplay and podcast projects.

The book is great, I have read 4 chapters. While its an American story, we feel it has real international relevance, as we in europe followed you on the same path around 10 years later. We were hoping to speak on Monday if you are free, at around 12pm noon or 1pm eastern USA time.

I just read Girl Boy Etc. It was amazing… I don’t think I have ever laughed that genuinely while reading a book. You have a gift! Can’t wait to read The Kings of New York.
I just read “Dickens of Detroit” about my father. That was a beautifully written article. Thank you for painting such a life-like picture of Elmore. Now I’ll have to go out and get your books.
